It will give VERY simple HTML help to get you started. It will help you to become familiar with the tags and codes to make a page from scratch. There will be NO pick and choose from this page it is only to learn SIMPLE HTML.
It is our hopes that GeoCities will have the Basic Editor back in service for us soon until then we will be here to help as much as you need us.
Below you will find the "Set Ups" for page building a page. It will show all the tags and have text saying what should go in those areas.
At the end of each step will be the link to your file manager so that you can do each step and SAVE it in your file manager. If you cannot print out this page, I would like to suggest that you place THIS PAGE on an F-Key in order to have easy access to return for the next steps.
If you have other questions about something we have not covered please feel free to contact us for help. You may want something extra that we will not cover on this page as it is a SIMPLE HTML help page, So if it is not here please let us know and we are more than happy to help you learn it one on one.
Are we Ready ?...........
We will be starting from your File Manager.
There is the
gray box at the top that says Advanced Editor if you click on it,
it will change to Basic. We will want to stay in Advanced for
this type of Editing. Then click on "NEW"
This will bring up the Advanced Editor page. There will be a smaller Gray box above that where you will enter your file name. If this is your first page of your site it will be called index.html If this is not your first page you can name it as you wish ending in html or htm.
After naming your file and find a BIG Gray Box with NOTHING in it. you will go down to the very TOP LEFT CORNER of the Big Gray Box. Here is where you will put your first "tag" For those of you who can decorate your mail this will work the exact same way.
1. Your first tag is
2. Next comes the tag where you will choose your background and text colors.
If you later decide to add an actual background to your site, we will be happy to help with this one on one. Please keep in mind, if you chose to use a background it should be uploaded to YOUR Y!Geo Files first.
Once you have added the previous codes
click SAVE and return to this page for the next step.
Now that you have color on your page, lets let people know what they will be visiting. These are the words that show up in the status bar when going to a page.
3. This will be your TITLE tag.
4. Next comes your Heading Tags. This puts a Heading on the top of your page kind of like a Title.
Your Welcome HereAgain, once you have added these
codes to your page click SAVE and return here for the next
steps.![]()
5. Next will come the "BODY" part of your page. This is where the bulk of your page will go, Here, you start putting all the information about your site.
When you go to the file manager to do this step write 1 paragraph only to see how it works then click SAVE
Return Here for the next step.
6. Next we can add a LINKS section, this will be where you add pages outside of your own site that you would like other people to see. Maybe some of your favorite sites.
You may have as many links as you like. If you have a site that you would like add to your page go ahead and
Return Here for the next
step.![]()
7. Now lets add your email address so people can let you know what they think of your new site.
Return Here for the next
step.![]()
As we have said these are VERY Basic instructions and we have set them up so that you can do them a step at a time.
The following TAGS are some you can use within your text to add some style to your page. Again these are VERY SIMPLE.
-This will make your
text BOLD.
will end your BOLD text.
-This will make your text
Italics.
will end your italics text.
-This will start a NEW paragraph.
-This will start text on the next line.
There is no need to
close this tag.
Again, we hope to have the Basic Editor back soon until then this Committee will do all it can to help you to make your site.
Please know that there is more to HTML than we have shown you here. These are the VERY BASICS of HTML to get you started and "moved in" to your site. If you have any questions please email Me or any of the other Community Leaders listed on the Index of this site.
If you would like to learn on your own, please check out Create It~101 or HTML Help. (Remember that you may contact any of the WebTV Committee members for assistance if you feel overwhelmed.)
