WebTV Most Frequently Asked

        Questions in GeoCities

        Hello, This page is set up so that you see the most frequently asked questions and the most easiest answers in order to help you build a better page. If you dont see your question on the list, send it to us so we can help others that may have the same problems.

        Q. Since I use WebTV do my graphics HAVE to be loaded into my files?

        A. YES.... WebTV users can use the Star Blvd Transloader to load anything needed into their files so there is no reason for remote linking.

        Remote Linking is when you use the URL of a gif,jpg,etc from anothers page. By doing this, you slow down the site from where the gif comes from and slow down your site as well.

        Once it is in your files it becomes yours and loads quickly. If you are not familiar with Star Blvd, you may contact any one of the CLs on the list and we can walk you through it step by step.

        It will be to your benefit to learn how to upload these things to your files. This will keep everyone happy, You, the site you borrow from, and GeoCities.

        Q. Can WebTV users use the new GeoBuilder, or Yahoo Pagebuilder?

        A. NO...Geobuilder and Pagebuilder require the use of "Windows" and webtv does not have this option. If you are a WebTV user with little HTML knowledge, your will be better to use the BASIC Editor in the File Manager.
        ===========================================

        Q. Can I use the EZ Upload?

        A. NO...This option is for PC users only. this allows them to pull things from their harddrive and load them into their Geo files. Again the BASIC Editor is the best way to start out.

        Q. I have 2 homepages in Geocities can I use the Universal Login?

        A YES....GeoCities has introduced a new Universal Login and has added a "Log OUT" option that can be found in your File Manager. (it is a red box near the top)

        If you choose to switch file managers, click on the log out button, and it will take you back to the "Members Page" where you originally logged in. Just enter in your new membername and password for your other site and it will take you to a second "members page" on the left will be a MENU click on "file manager" and it will take you to the page where you can enter into the new sites files.

        If for some reason this does not work for you, there is always the option to turn off your webtv unit and relog in that way.

        Q. How do I add a second page to my website?

        A. Using the BASIC Editor go through the same steps of aking your first page and when you get to when you get to where it says "LINKS", that is where you will add the URL of your index.html (first page) this will go in the box on the LEFT. In the Description box on the RIGHT, you can put "HOME" this will allow visitors to go from your second page to your first page.

        Then go back to your index.html (first page) and add the URL in the box on the LEFT for your second page and in the Description box you can put "Page 2". This will tie them together.

        Keep in mind that the use of "HOME" and "Page2" are just examples. you may put whatver you like to describe your pages.

        Q. Can I add music to my site and if so, How?

        A. Yes Music can be added to your site. Please make sure to load midis etc. to your GeoCities files first. They can be added using the Embed SRC and BGsound codes like used in your email signature box.

        Example:

        <EMBED SRC="http:URL of midi" HIDDEN="TRUE" AUTOSTART="TRUE"> <NOEMBED*> <!-- non Netscape browsers --> <BGSOUND SRC="URL of midi"> </NOEMBED>

        Using BOTH of the above codes on your page ensures that PC users as well as Webtv users will be able to hear your music.

        Q. Why cant I see some Border Backgrounds on my site?

        A. After the summer upgrade last year we were not able to see certain backgrounds (mostly borders) anymore in our sites. There are still some out there that we can use but THEY MUST be loaded into your GeoCities files.

        We will do our best to add border backgrounds to this site in order for you to have easy access.

        We currently have a wonderful group of CLs that are creating some beautiful backgrounds and gifs for this site. Please come back for updates.

        Since the 99 WebTV Upgrade it seems the bug dealing with border backgrounds has been fixed. If you are still having trouble with borders please contact us.

        Q. Can Webtv use Meta tags?

        A. This is a tricky question.

        While webtv does not support the Meta tag, if you use it the PC world will be able to pick up your site. However, you run the risk of having your backgrounds not show or have your page be disable in some way. This information has come to me through WebTV themselves. I was not clear on this so I called to make sure.

        If anyone knows of a way around this problem please let us know so we can pass it on to others.

        Q. Why cant I access my GeoCities email account?

        A. WebTV is not able to retrieve messages sent to the GeoCities email account.

        It is suggewsted that if you use WebTV that you have all GeoCities email forwarded to your WebTV accunt. This can be done through your profile editor, simply follow the email links.

        You may also use another email account for your contacts from visitors such as YaHoo, Hotmail, etc...
